Match at a glance

Bocharova/Voronina outclassed with no problems van Iersel/Ypma in two sets in the first rubber. Only in the first minutes of the match were the Dutch putting some pressure on the opponents with a point for a point race. However, Bocharova/Voronina took the lead at 7-4 in their favour, while van Iersel/Ypma were “warming up” to find their rhythm, struggling with some errors on the serve. The Russian players kept calm and continued playing their game to eventually emerge victorious in the first set.

In the second set, the Russians stormed out leading 5-0 in the beginning, but the van Iersel and Ypma tried to get closer, this time becoming the serve their strongest element. However,  managed to resist and took the important victory.

Quotes

“It is hard to play in front of the hosts’ public, they were cheering up for them a lot. But we wanted to show our game and managed to cope with the excitement.”

Maria Voronina (RUS)

“Russia have two very good teams, it is going to be an exciting second rubber, but our young girls did a very good tournament and I hope that they can make us all happy and proud.  Sometimes you have days like this - we couldn’t find our rhythm, we tried to push on the serve, but credits to Russia for handling it well.”

Marleen Ramond - van Iersel (NED)

“We will see what happens if it comes to a Golden match. It is a technical decision who will be competing at it if that’s the case.”

Pleun Ypma (NED)
